2013–2020: Successful Bti project to reduce Anopheles populations in Nouna (Burkina Faso).

Burkina Faso

The most extensive project to date on environmentally responsible control of Anopheles mosquitoes was carried out in cooperation between the Heidelberg Institute of Global Health (HIGH) (Prof. Rainer Sauerborn and Dr. Peter Dambach), the health center in Nouna (Dr. Ali Sie), and GFS in the Kossi district (capital: Nouna). Funded by the Manfred Lautenschläger Foundation, the project ran from 2013 to 2020. Its goal was to transfer the experience gained by KABS in biological mosquito control along the Upper Rhine to the Kossi province, covering 84 municipalities. During the preparation phase, breeding sites were mapped and initial Bti trials conducted. Infrastructure was established in the participating communities, followed by routine Bti applications carried out by locally trained staff. The project achieved a significant reduction in vector populations and resulted in numerous scientific publications.
