Non-profit research for sustainable mosquito control

Sustainable mosquito control through research and practical application

Since 1989, the Society for the Promotion of Mosquito Control (GFS) and its Institute of Dipterology (IfD) have been researching and developing environmentally responsible methods to control mosquitoes – both as nuisance pests and as vectors of disease – in Germany and worldwide.

SOCIETY FOR THE PROMOTION OF MOSQUITO CONTROL (GFS)

Welcome to GFS–IfD

The Society for the Promotion of Mosquito Control (GFS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting people, the environment, and public health. Its work focuses on addressing the impact of mosquitoes on quality of life, infrastructure, and disease prevention. GFS serves as a connecting platform between science, public authorities, and practical implementation.

For over three decades, GFS has supported municipalities, institutions, and international partners in developing long-term strategies for managing mosquito populations. The focus is on transparency, expert guidance, and sustainable solutions that are regionally adapted and socially accepted. Through this integrated approach, GFS contributes to well-informed decision-making and effective control measures.

Non-profit research for effective mosquito control

GFS & Institute of Dipterology (IfD)

The Society for the Promotion of Mosquito Control (GFS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to scientifically sound and environmentally responsible mosquito control since 1989.

With its Institute of Dipterology (IfD) , GFS operates a specialized research unit focused on the biology, ecology, and control of biting insects. Its mission is to develop sustainable vector control methods that are both effective and environmentally responsible.

The work of GFS and IfD brings together research, practical application, and international collaboration.

Mission and objectives of GFS

The Society aims to optimize environmentally responsible mosquito control for the benefit of people, the protection of nature, and the preservation of biodiversity. This is achieved by adapting strategies to ecological, epidemiological, and socio-economic conditions and applying them nationally and internationally.

To achieve this, GFS focuses on:

Maintaining strong international partnerships to ensure continuous knowledge exchange and to further develop and implement environmentally responsible mosquito control methods.

Applying sustainable and effective control strategies internationally—particularly in tropical regions—in the fight against malaria and arboviruses. This includes training local personnel not only in Germany but primarily within the affected countries.

Securing funding through a combination of internal resources, such as membership fees and donations, and external funding from national and international research and development collaborations. Over the past decades, GFS has carried out numerous projects not only in Germany and Europe, but especially in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

International collaboration

International cooperation and projects

The work of the Society for the Promotion of Mosquito Control (GFS) and the Institute of Dipterology (IfD) is internationally oriented. Mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit do not stop at national borders—making cross-regional and cross-continental knowledge exchange essential.

In collaboration with scientific institutions, public authorities, and local partners, GFS carries out research projects across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The goal is to develop sustainable control strategies adapted to different ecological, climatic, and social conditions—protecting people while preserving biodiversity.

What we do

Our core areas of work

The work of the Society for the Promotion of Mosquito Control (GFS) and the Institute of Dipterology (IfD) is based on scientific research, expert analysis, and the practical implementation of sustainable measures. The goal is to effectively control mosquito populations while taking ecological systems into account.

Our approach

Science-based mosquito control methods

Effective mosquito control requires a differentiated approach that considers biological, ecological, and regional factors. GfS and the Institute of Dipterology (IfD) therefore follow a science-based methodology built on analysis, monitoring, and targeted interventions. The aim is to develop solutions that are both effective in the long term and environmentally responsible.

Research in practice

Projects and international collaboration

Research at GfS and the Institute of Dipterology (IfD) goes beyond the laboratory—it is applied in real-world projects across the globe. In collaboration with scientific institutions, public authorities, and municipalities, practical solutions are developed for the sustainable control of mosquito populations. These projects range from regional research initiatives to international partnerships across Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Further development of biological control strategies against Aedes and Culex species, with a focus on the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), through the use and optimization of microbial methods such as Bti.
Monitoring of mosquitoes in Germany to analyze distribution and seasonal dynamics – a foundation for research and control strategies.
EU-funded Interreg project focused on protecting birds of prey and studying mosquito-borne infections in the Danube regions.

For practitioners and decision-makers

Added value for municipalities, institutions, and partners

The challenges of mosquito control are complex and require well-founded, science-based decision-making. The Society for the Promotion of Mosquito Control (GFS) and the Institute of Dipterology (IfD) support municipalities, public authorities, and partners in developing measures that are not viewed in isolation, but in the context of ecological, climatic, and regional conditions.

By combining research, analysis, and practical experience, GFS provides reliable decision-making foundations for planning and evaluating control strategies. Transparency, traceability, and long-term effectiveness are key priorities—independent of short-term or purely technical solutions.

Municipalities and partners benefit from expert guidance that bridges scientific quality with practical implementation. The goal is to develop sustainable solutions that are both effective and responsible toward the environment and society.
